The NMSU National Scholars Day

If you have been designated by the College Board as a National Merit Semifinalist, National Hispanic Scholar or National Achievement Scholar, you are invited to the National Scholars Day at New Mexico State University on November 21, 2008. NMSU at a Glance

Total enrollment for NMSU main campus and branch campuses is 26,391. The main campus enrollment is 16,072, which includes 3,416 graduate students. Minority enrollment at the main campus is more than 48 percent (41.4 percent Hispanic, 2.9 percent American Indian, 2.7 percent African-American and 1.3 percent Asian-American). The faculty/student ratio is 1 to 19.

New Mexico State University is the only land-grant institution in the nation that is also classified as Hispanic-serving by the federal government and ranked by the Carnegie Foundation as a high research university.

NMSU was rated in the top 50 colleges and universities in the U.S. by The Washington Monthly for "fostering scientific and humanistic research," and promoting "an ethic of service to country."

Keynote Speaker

David V. Jáuregui

David V. Jáuregui, associate professor of civil engineering and Higher Education Educator of the Year
"Learning Outside the Classroom"

Dr. Jáuregui was recently selected as Higher Education Educator of the Year by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). A native of the town of Hurley, N.M., he received a bachelor and master of science degree in civil engineering from NMSU and a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

Jáuregui teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at NMSU in mechanics of materials, structural analysis, steel design and behavior, experimental methods, and bridge engineering. His nationally recognized and well-funded research has made significant contributions to the structural engineering field in the areas of bridge design, load rating, advanced analysis and field testing. Jáuregui received an NMSU University Research Council Award for Exceptional Achievements in Creative Scholarly Activity in 2003. He was twice named NMSU Civil Engineering Professor of the Year (2003-2004, 2004-2005) and he received the NMSU College of Engineering Bromilow Teaching Excellence Award in 2006.

Residence Hall Option

Students visiting NMSU for National Scholars' Day can see first-hand what it's like to live in the Honors Residential College Living Learning Community in Monagle Hall. If you would like to stay overnight with current students in the Honors LLC, please check the appropriate box in the application form. Same sex roommates and suitemates will be assigned, and space is available on a first come, first served basis. If you select this option, please bring a sleeping bag and pillow with you to campus and plan to have a great time!
