Position Overview
The Crimson Scholar Residential Mentors are live-in upper-class student staff within NMSU's Honors Residential College (HRC) in Monagle Hall who provide services to a variety of audiences, including Honors students in the HRC and other residence halls, the Honors College, and students across campus. CSRMs contribute to overall student success by building community and ties amongst students in the Honors College and sharing their academic skills and knowledge with NMSU students through peer advising, mentoring, programming, and tutoring.
CSRMs will work 20 hours a week during each semester, and are required to attend and complete all pre-service and in-service training and development programs, including certification through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). CSRMs will receive a $1,688 stipend per semester to be paid out over the course of bi-weekly pay periods through Crimson Scholar Work-study funds.
General Expectations
- The Crimson Scholar Residential Mentor position is a full academic year commitment.
- Maintain Crimson Scholar eligibility, including an NMSU cumulative grade point average of 3.500 or better. Failure to maintain this CSPA cumulative grade point average will result in loss of your position.
- Be available to residents in the community for consultation.
- Be a role model for students by following all residence hall and university policies, and state/federal laws.
- Work effectively, productively and independently.
- Forego all other employment and internships unless approved in advance.
- Participate in Crimson Scholar Residential Mentor selection processes as needed.
- Participate in assessment projects and work to reach pre-established goals for resident participation.
- Carry out additional duties and responsibilities as may be required.
- Participate in an evaluation process each semester.
- Remain on campus a minimum of 1 weekend per month.
Position-Related Job Expectations
General Responsibilities
- Partner with Community Assistants and other Housing & Residential Life staff to work as an effective member of a team to create a learning supportive environment through educational and academic initiatives, bulletin boards, door decs, community development activities, and service-learning opportunities.
- Serve as liaison between students and the Honors College.
- Help assess community needs within the HRC & on-campus Honors students, and create and implement programs to address those needs.
- Participate in admissions and recruitment related activities as needed.
- Attend Residential Mentor staff meetings, Faculty Advisor meetings, and other meetings and appointments as necessary.
- Read and respond (as needed) to e-mail daily.
- Nurture your own academic performance and progress – serve as a model of academic excellence.
- Maintain a positive attitude.
- Live in assigned room on campus, at no cost.

Honors Residential College Development & Outreach
- Create individual and on-going projects, programs, and activities to engage and challenge HRC residents and provide opportunities for exposure and involvement in areas such as community service & service learning, undergraduate research, and social justice issues.
- Conduct outreach to Honors students living in the residence halls outside of the HRC, including Honors clusters in Piñon Hall, to promote involvement in the Honors College and related activities.
- Collaborate with the Crimson Scholar Ambassadors and Honors College staff in recruitment of new students and promotion of the NMSU Honors College to all audiences.
- Whenever possible promote and attend speakers or events that might be of interest to students in the HRC and in the community, particularly those that are academic in nature.
- Encourage interest in academics and activities through the use of public areas, bulletin boards, your door, newsletters, etc.
Peer Advising & Mentoring
- Develop meaningful positive relationships with all HRC residents and know each on a personal level through regular one-on-one contact, recognition, reinforcement, and similar forms of support that will be necessary throughout the academic year.
- Connect HRC residents to NMSU and residence hall community by role modeling and encouraging attendance and participation at all community functions (e.g., Aggie Welcome Week, AggieFest, floor meetings, programming, Hall Council/SGCR, student groups, etc.).
- Provide learning assistance services to residents as needed through individual and group interactions and programming.
Tutoring
- Complete five (5) to ten (10) weekly scheduled hours of individual/group tutoring, including related administrative tasks, in designated subject areas in La Vista Learning Center.
- Direct students to the appropriate resources when you are not able to assist them.
