The Honors College Scholarship For International Research
The $5000 NMSU Honors College Scholarship provides NMSU students with a unique opportunity for a self-designed foreign travel and research experience. The proposed experience must go beyond a regular classroom or study-abroad experience and promise to expand the student’s horizons and complement his or her undergraduate education. All sophomore and junior Crimson Scholars (min. cumulative GPA of 3.5) are eligible and encouraged to apply. Students at branch campuses may apply but must enroll at the main NMSU campus by the time of the award. Students are required to work with a Faculty Mentor in developing their proposals; if needed, the Honors College will help students find a suitable mentor.
In addition to being named the 2010 Honors College Scholar, the scholarship recipient will receive $5,000.00 paid during the student’s junior year or during the summer prior to the junior year (depending on class standing), to cover the student’s expenses for the special travel/research experience designated in the student’s proposal. Candidates selected as juniors must use the scholarship during the summer after the junior year.
Application materials should be uploaded through the application website and also submitted in hard copy in the Honors College main office by March 5, 2010. The application consists of a coversheet, cover letter, resume, personal statement, project proposal, budget, endorsement from the Faculty Mentor and one additional letter of recommendation, and a signed statement attesting that the application is the candidate’s own work. The heart of the application is the Project Proposal. Proposed projects might, for example, take the form of a research experience in a lab overseas, a creative project in a foreign country, or a unique international study proposal. Past scholarship recipients have conducted independent research, volunteered with nonprofit organizations, worked in labs abroad, and combined organized master classes or seminars with independent research. Many recipients have used this research as the basis for an Honors Thesis. Whatever the student chooses, the project should be creative and student generated. The scholarship is not intended to fund regular study abroad programs.
