Midterm Exam Study Questions

The midterm exam will consist of 3 parts for a total of 100 points:

The following questions are intended to help guide your study for the midterm.  The midterm exam question will not be one of the study questions exactly as worded, but may be a variant of one or a combination of more than one.  If you study for these questions you will be prepared for the midterm.

(1)  Explain the Hippocratic conception of health and disease.  What changes did Galen make to the Hippocratic medicine and what was the significance of these changes?

(3)  Describe Hippocrates's argument in the treatise, On the Sacred Disease.  What is the significance of the Hippocratic argument?

(4)  Describe the principal contributions of Arabic medicine.  Be prepared to give illustrations of your argument with reference to the following Arab medical writers:  Hunayn ibn Ishaq (Johannitius), al-Razi (Rhazes), Ibn Sina (Avicenna).

(5)  Describe the main features of the medieval medical system:  what were the various layers of medical practices (e.g., physicians, surgeons) and how were they differentiated from one another?

(6)  Describe the impact of the Black Death on medieval society and culture.

(7)  What was the impact of Renaissance humanism on medicine?

(8)  Describe and assess Andreas Vesalius's contributions to anatomy.

(9)  Describe the social, economic, and cultural impact of new diseases such as syphilis and typhus in Renaissance Europe.

(10)  Describe the Renaissance medical hierarchy (physicians, surgeons, midwives, etc.) and the functions of each type of healer.  What distinguished physicians from other healers?

(11)  Describe the impact and consequences of epidemic diseases in the New World.  Do epidemics help answer the question:  Why did the Europeans conquer America so easily?

(12)  Who was Paracelsus and what were his principal contributions to medicine?

(13)  Describe William Harvey's experiments demonstrating the circulation of the blood.
