February’s Student of the Month

“The honors program opens a lot of opportunities to students. I think it’s great to have all these resources at our fingertips and should be taken advantage of!”

I have been at NMSU since the fall semester of 2012, so this fall was my fourth semester (I took classes during the summer semester). I am originally from Minnesota but moved to Tucson, Arizona where I lived for 12 years before coming to Las Cruces for school.I am working towards two Bachelor’s degrees, one in Dance with a concentration in contemporary style and one in mathematics education.

I love spending my time being creative. I keep myself busy with various crafts and projects, especially knitting! I also love spending free time educating people on fitness and wellness. I am a member of the NMSU Contemporary Dance Theater Company which is a part of the dance program and comes along with many community service and performance opportunities. Two of my favorite books are Memoirs of a Geisha and The Hunger Games. I would love to visit Italy! I love that you can really see the history in every building. I also studied Italian for a short while and have always wanted to pursue learning the language better. A quote that inspires me every single day is something Debra Knapp, the director of the dance program here at NMSU, said during one of our classes: “Chase your bliss.”

My favorite thing about the Honors College is how many opportunities it opens up for students that put in the effort to get good grades. As a future educator I strongly advocate rewarding students for hard work so I think it is wonderful that students who show dedication to their studies get rewarded with all these resources. Something I am very passionate about is following where your passions take you. Too often students feel pressured to get a “good” degree that will ensure a well-paying career, and most of the time this is because students may not know what they’re passionate about yet. I strongly encourage students to explore all their options and get involved in many different worlds. Once they find something that they love they should chase it, regardless of what it is. Students should be excited to graduated and find a job in their field of study. Also! It’s never too late to go back to school and follow a new passion!
